YOU are the LIGHT

"14 You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father." - Matthew 5:14-16

Light and dark - the two have been a timeless epic contrast.  So, what is light?  What is darkness?

“Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact, we can use Newton's prism to break white light into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn't this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present." - Albert Einstein (Malice of Absence)

Some have used Einstein's’ statement in attempt to prove the existence of God.  As an individual, I must be wiser than that - not deriving means outside there intended / original context. There are many different views of light and darkness in the world. A few individuals have focused on the shades of light and darkness in attempts to avoid conflict or push back. However, when shifting the focus to a shade or sub point - one must also recognize the source from which the shade or hue originated from to continue any logical thought pattern.

If the text in Matthew 5:14 makes a reference towards ‘me’ (Trevor Drinen) as a ‘light of the world’ - I must first discover the source from which I obtain this illuminance or likeness to light.

John 1:1-8 reads, “1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.”

Here in John 1:1-8, two vital points are made about this subject of light.

First, “.... In him (God & the Word) was life, and that life was the light of all mankind....”

What was the light of all mankind?
Life.

Where is the source of ‘life’?
.... .... God & the Word.

Secondly,‘....witness to testify concerning the light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was     not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.”

What is my role / purpose?
To personally testify concerning the light.

Why?
So that others might believe that God is the source of life.

I am man.

A creation.

Born of woman, giving intellect, and empowered to regenerate life.

I am mere reflection of my creator.

Yes, this does point to my biological parents and at the same time points beyond them to the source from which the origin of ‘life’ was created.

Personal bottom line application:

1) To not attempt to hide the fact I am a creation.

2) In all that I am / In all that I do - to give credit where credit is do (aka: a lights illumination is derived from a source).

3) If people see a light in me - I am to point them to the TRUE source!  Jesus Christ alone is the light of the world....
